By evening the messages disappeared, and some of the cartoons were back. Representatives for YouTube and Warner would not confirm whether the companies had tried to remove the cartoons..."

Analysis of Charlie the Unicorn

Thus far, "Charlie the Unicorn" movies have followed a twisted take on the "Monomyth," also known as the "Hero's Journey." The Hero's Journey consists of 5 major parts, and all (or variants) are found in both this and the first Charlie video. I shall analyze and demonstrate the formulaic nature of both these videos in the paradigm of the Hero's Journey.

1. A Call to Adventure - Charlie's "friends" find some excuse to take him on a journey.

First movie: map to candy mountain
Second movie: magical amulet that must be taken to the banana king

2. A Road of Trials - Charlie, after initially rejecting the offer of adventure, eventually relents and decides to travel with the other unicorns. The journey involves a lot of walking and non-sequitors from the other two unicorns, and they always meet at least 1 strange object/animal along the way before reaching the goal.

First movie: Liopleurodon
Second movie: Monolithic Z

In addition, after the initial meeting with the object/animal, the subsequent scene involves a unique form of transportation of some kind, often unsettling to Charlie. Combined with the annoyances of the other two unicorns, one could say that the ultimate trial is that on Charlie's patience.

First movie: magical bridge of hope and wonder
Second movie: choo choo shoe

3. Achieving the goal or "boon" - Charlie and co. finally reach the intended destination. This is always accompanied with a victorious song of some kind performed by unrelated character(s).

First movie: the letters C, A, N, D, and Y dance and sing to convince Charlie to enter the cave of Candy Mountain.
Second movie: the "steward" of the Temple of the Banana King, a green lizard of some kind with a spade-shaped tail and wearing Santa Claus regalia, sings about how Charlie should put a banana in his ear.

4. A return to the ordinary world - Charlie makes his way back to where he started, only to find himself worse off than when he started.

First movie: the other 2 unicorns steal one of Charlie's kidneys.
Second movie: the other 2 unicorns steal Charlie's stuff.

5. Applying the boon - This stage does not occur in the Charlie stories, and can probably be replaced with a stage entitled "Schadenfreude," in which Charlie's misery is humorous due to the circumstances he was put through only to ultimately find himself deprived of things he possessed before he embarked on the journey. One could call it a "Tragic Hero's Journey." See Aristotlian Tragedy for more information.

In conclusion, it is clear that Mr. Jason Steele is a hackneyed ripoff of James Joyce and Joseph Campbell. Also, we may conclude that Charlie the Unicorn is very bad at pattern recognition.

Friends, sifters, netizens -- lend me your ears.

The time has come for all good parties to aid in the promotion and publication of a fine and wonderful video -- a video which has failed not once but THREE TIMES to appear in the annals of siftdom.

It is a somewhat slower-paced and longer short film than much of the usual fare here, and yet I assure you that it is well worth spending some time to slow down and appreciate.

This short film won an Academy award, beating out such greats as Lifted, which currently stands at 80 votes here; and A Gentleman's Duel, which has 157 votes.

So I beseech you: relax, have a cup of tea, and enjoy The Danish Poet, the fruit of some of Denmark and Canada's finest talent.

Looking for a sifted, b/w, NSFW cartoon

Hi,

I've already bugged Dag about this and he advised me to ask again here.

I'm looking for a video I've watched about half a year ago. It's a black-and-white cartoon. Simple drawing style. Actually, it's various episodes of this cartoon clipped one after the other in one video.

The cartoons are about a scummy, bald, agressive, swearing male American who is coping with everyday life (like a neighbour who comes over, or his kid who breaks a lamp inside the house). The guy either mumbles NSFW stuff, yells or doesn't say anything. In the lamp episode, after thinking for almost 2 minutes he touches a (broken?) wire and gets electrified.

Can anybody help me out?

Well everyone, it's almost half way through the month and I wanted to remind you all that this month's contest is a go.
