a 177KB demo that unless you happen to know about procedural textures will make you think it is somehow hiding somewhere 100mb+ of data:

It needs a full dx9 hardware card, ie ati 9500 or higher or nvidia 5200 or higher.

and *hilarious, that the video file to display this?
was a 16.5 Mb .flv file (which i just downloaded).
that's about one percent of the size of the original file.

because the music is different.

Actually, that would be a hundred times bigger than the demo.. so that would be closer to 10000% or something.. Still, you are closer than a young earth creationist
177k is around 1.05% of 16.5 MB.
like a rip-off ofsimilar to .kkrieger (http://www.theprodukkt.com/kkrieger) which was a 96k demo released a couple years ago. From the FAQ: "alternate background music, will still be considered dupes." *discuss
in fact there's up to fr-059 here: http://www.farb-rausch.com/productions.php
oh and about the dupe thing: this version is IMO, the original version as the music is inherent in the demo itself which you can download and watch in high resolution here: http://www.scene.org/file.php?file=/parties/2007/breakpoint07/demo/fr-041_debris.zip&fileinfo
Wait - how is this NOT a dupe?
From the FAQ: "alternate background music, will still be considered dupes." discuss
Well the rule sucks then, and here's why:
The music for both my video and this video are appropriate, yet they are distinctly different. However, NOT all music would be appropriate. If someone posted this video with the SpongeBob SquarePants theme it would suck. This video does NOT suck, AND it is distinctly different. If we are to firmly adhere to this rule then we should discard this video, because if you subtract the sound and factor out the zoom that was added after this video went viral then it would be the same video as this.
People know the difference and can vote accordingly. Leave this one alone. Remember that I posted the original, so if I can live with it then so can everyone else.
> Actually, that would be a hundred times bigger than the demo.. so that would be closer to 10000% or something.. Still, you are closer than a young earth creationist
actually, it's still exactly what i said it was, in the first place.
just depends on whether you want to be unnecessarily impressed, by thinking about how much bigger something is. (for whatever reason...ahem)
that said.. the demo isn't new.. and most people probably won't be to impressed by it, esp in grainy video vision.
NOT!!!!
Yet they should. There are a handful or tech demo contests, some with very specific goals, technology-wise, held each year around the world with different but sizable limitations on final archive size. Some of my less-technologically-challenged-friends have participated in those, the last file size I remember was 2KB (think around 2003 or so). and by the was, I am kind of amazed nobody's discussed the punctuality of whether this is 177kb or 177KB. and I bet in this case it's the latter. I'm sick of people writing bytes with small caps, come on, it's eight times the difference, you know.
While I'm sure there are a multitude of tech demos out there I've yet to see any that have such impressive visuals and such a small file size. Post some of the ones you like and I'd be happy to vote for them.
Does this mean we are now supposed to allow everyone to start submitting dupes as long as the music is different?
Don't be so quick to return. This definitely needs to be discussed further. It is the exact same video.
Does this mean we are now supposed to allow everyone to start submitting dupes as long as the music is different?
That depends. Will there be an epidemic of identical videos being sifted with different music? I honestly don't believe so. Along the lines of what KP said, would this video have sifted had the music been from SpongeBob SquarePants? So can a person take any old video they want, then change the music to any old tune, and make it work? I don't think so.
If we have to throw this one out because the sound is different, then we'd have to throw out a bunch of other videos too, like the one KP mentioned for starters. I think these things need to be judged on a case by case basis. I think qruel's video should stay, but I say we should put it to a vote. I won't complain if I find myself in the minority.
In any event, the case at hand is whether this is a dupe or not, and not about which one is the original.
BTW, if the membership decides that this is a dupe then I will discard mine so that qruel can keep his. However I see trouble if the verdict comes back dupe. Not big trouble, but more nickel and dime problems. I don't think we need that shit.
http://www.videosift.com/video/Ducks-Stampede-in-an-India-Village
vs
http://www.videosift.com/video/Duck-Herding-now-with-added-soundtrack
The ONLY difference is that music was added. And trust me, I could find more videos here that are arbitrarily similar enough for someone to scream "DUPE!". I think both "Duck Stampede" versions should stay because the music adds another humorous element to arvana's version. I also think both versions should stay for this video, because the music changes the mood of the video, and yet both work with the visuals. We're really splitting hairs with this one. Are we SURE this is the path we want to take?
*return
There may be some special cases where new music ironically changes the meaning of the visual, or enhances some particular aspect, and we should judge those on a case-by-case basis.
In general though, if it's just a change in background music- I say the dupes should go.
I say keep, accounting to exceptional circumstances.

Hell Yea!! That's exactly the one I'm talking about. It's still pretty damn awesome!
I'm pretty amazed that somebody other than me remembers that.
